the arch
symbol of a leap
from east to west
from settled hills
to wide-open plain
and clear blue skies
with an occasional cloud
you reach for the light
you soar in angular white edges
you turn gently
to look back at the river
and make the city
gray up into the horizon
i'll turn again
i'll come back to earth
i'll let the clouds pass untouched
but for now
my white ribbons, my edges, my angles
embrace the threshold
of two feet barely touching
and the eternal glow of freedom
